We're heading into the final weekend of trying to figure out what to pack in the suitcases and boxes that will go with us on the plane versus what will go in the sea container. We're moving to Michigan - back to the snow (at least at this time of year)! The packers will start on Monday, and it's about to get crazy around here, so I guess it's time to write a goodbye note.

I like to call them dancing windows, and I've only seen them a handful of times. The first time I saw them on the side of the building across the street, and it took me a while to figure out what it was.

The premise is that one of the fellows is doing very well with the course, and his sidekick buddy is eternally trying to convince him that he's learning English just fine without the online course.
This was the first one we saw that made us giggle.
This one had us singing "The Book's on the Table" for weeks! It was a pretty day. Sunny. Hot, in fact!
Why don't you put your suits on?
Why?
Because you might want to get wet!
So along the way Andy and Sam decided they should stop at every rinse off spot along the beach. (We usually avoid the sea water because, unfortunately, the salty water stings Andy's dry skin.)
The water was cold, but refreshing!

It's the women's bathroom at the restaurant Van Gogh here in Santos, and I've never seen a bathroom like it before, nor do I anticipate seeing one like it ever again.
It's our favorite place to eat pizza, and their other food is good, too. But it's worth the trip just to see the bathroom. One of the things I love here in Santos are the sidewalks. This pattern is the most common, and I think it's called Rio, because they have this design all over Rio de Janeiro as well.
Here's another design in front of the nearby tennis club.
Here's the wave "Rio" pattern again, but made with pre-fabricated tiles.

Andy and Sam had their Mostra Cultural at school today. A day of presentations, plays, demonstrations, and artwork displays.
This year the 3rd grade classes put on a play based on a book they read after winter break.
Sam played the King of the Vitamins!
Just over a year ago my kids knew no Portuguese!

After we checked into our hotel in Buenos Aires, we went for a walk. These big gates led to a courtyard area that included a restaurant and some type of Polish society, among other things.
The next day we explored some more and happened upon this museum that was underneath La Casa Rosada (their White House, but it's Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-29202396159943406112012-10-16T15:38:00.001-03:002012-10-19T14:50:57.882-03:00Beautiful few days for a bike ride....
Sunday afternoon Otto and Andy went out for their first official bike ride since we've been here. Yesterday the weather was even nicer so Sam, Andy, and I went for our first bike ride together. There is a very nice bicycle path that runs the length of the beach in Santos, and several that are popping up in other areas of the city. (Av. Ana Costa has one for anyone familiar with Santos.Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-32140382107245356162012-09-20T15:17:00.001-03:002012-09-20T21:46:48.872-03:00Saco cheioI've been meaning to write a post about this for almost a year! I'm such a procrastinator sometimes.
When we first moved here, Otto was smitten with expressions he was hearing at work involving the scrotum. You know, the male ball sack, or is it a ball sac? In either case, in Brazil it is a saco (probably partly slang; I'm sure there is a more scientific name). And both men and womenJessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-10445907114443643072012-08-23T17:14:00.002-03:002012-08-23T21:52:49.782-03:00Delícia! And my inspiration for the day...
Delícia is one of my favorite words here. Most commonly it describes a beautiful day. According to the dictionary delightful would be the literal translation, but I think I like it so much because it sounds a lot like delicious. You could describe a day as delightful in English, but if you described it as delicious, how great a day would THAT be?!
And I'm finally getting used to the word Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-87910657581863439562012-08-10T11:09:00.000-03:002012-08-10T11:14:08.080-03:00San Martin de los Andes
Our first stop in Argentina was San Martin de los Andes. Otto has really been missing the skiing since moving from Canada, so we had to find a ski hill ASAP!! :o) The resort closest to us was Chapelco. The view was beautiful, but unfortunately the snow wasn't very good. So we only got a wee taste of skiing/snowboarding; not what we were hoping for. Oh well, sometimes you Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-90531538496064489002012-07-10T21:18:00.000-03:002012-07-10T21:18:11.847-03:00Sam's Signage
Andy was bathing in our bathroom this evening before dinner when he started receiving signs from Sam slipped under the door.
Here was the first.
This one showed up a few minutes later.
A third then slipped under the door.
I can't believe it. We're having pork roast and carrots and potatoes.
Then, per all accounts, Andy yelled to Sam that he Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-64632142810100694592012-06-29T10:17:00.000-03:002012-06-30T19:53:19.312-03:00Festa Junina
Before we leave the month of June, I'd better get a post up about Festa Junina! This is a festival celebrated throughout the month of June celebrating St. John the Baptist, St. Peter, and St. Anthony. But more predominately it celebrates the food and culture of the people that live in the interior of Brazil on farms and ranches.
Here we were on our way to the Festa Junina Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-5501880208237516242012-06-12T18:48:00.000-03:002012-06-30T19:56:25.181-03:00First Family Visit
A quick note to anyone that may be connected with Blogger that might possibly be reading - I'm not a fan of the new blog editor!! And now on to more important things....
Mom and Bill were here for a couple weeks! Luckily we had lovely, sunny, warm weather while they were here. We've had many chilly, rainy days since their departure.

If I have developed a habit of buying anything while living here it has been teas and bags of different leaves and spices. Some things I've never seen before, and it's reasonably priced. Cinnamon sticks are downright cheap compared to what you would pay in The States or Canada.

Here, chicken is frango. And roasted chicken is frango assado, one of my favorite (and easiest!) things to make when the weather turns cooler. This is the first time I've made a roasted chicken since we've been here. The temperature was cool for a few months when we arrived, but the rental cookware didn't include anything for roasting.
So today marked the first purchase of Jessicahttp://www.blogger.com/profile/00776044886872007434noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-626402665667803590.post-19434782775534361512012-05-10T17:07:00.000-03:002012-05-10T17:08:15.826-03:00Cotton rollI saw this in the store today - hydrophilic cotton roll. (I had to look up what hydrophilic meant even in English: having a strong affinity for water. Made sense when I looked at the word again.)
I'm pretty sure I've seen this in the past at some point, but it's been a long time. Like in-my-grandmother's-bathroom-cabinet-when-I-was-a-kid long time. I've known about this recipe for a few weeks now, and having made it for the second time today, felt an obligation to share it with you. My Portuguese teacher, and more importantly my friend, gave me this recipe and I REALLY like it. There is nearly an entire orange and apple in the cake and it's delicious.
